7. A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabelle Allende

This novel was a pleasant change of historical fiction with its focus on the Spanish Civil War and the many, many years that follow it. Although some were able to migrate to South America, and rebuild in a new country, the impact of war never really left then. In A Long Petal of the Sea, Victor is a gentle soul who cares so much for those he loves and those in need of medical attention. Roser, who’s life starts out rough, eventually finds her way into being surrounded by appreciation. Together, although unplanned, they support each other through all of lives curve balls, and in the end are grateful for each other. This novel is just filled with so much growth and perseverance from everyone. With spanning nearly a lifetime, this adventure of challenges, life, music and government, really does leave you ready to live to see another day.
